Middle School Programs
There are three Middle School Magnet
Academies within the Muscogee County School District. In order to enter a middle school magnet you will be required to
meet minimum academic and behavioral standards. If you participate in a program
of excellence you will be expected to maintain sound academic performance and
exhibit outstanding behavior. The school you choose may require you to sign a
contract. Individual schools will publish standards for remaining in their
program.

East Columbus Magnet Academy
Our Academic Program
The East Columbus Magnet Academy for Gifted/Talented is a rigorous program to
extend the middle school curriculum. The goal of the magnet is to advance the learning
across the curriculum as well as to extend the curriculum beyond the program of
the regular student. The
SPIRIT
of East Columbus stands for
Students
Progressing
In
Rigorous
Individual
Talents. Students
can excel in a program that is especially designed to enhance individual talents
in developing leaders of tomorrow. Students are provided with extensive use of
technology to allow for research, video conferencing, and telecommunication to
prepare them for the future
Our Community Service
Students are encouraged to enhance their academic program through
application of their skills to projects within the community. Students are
taught that there are many ways to work within the community; they may give of their
time, talent, and /or resources. Community service is often coordinated through
various organizations within the school.
Several students represent East Columbus Magnet Academy on the
Columbus Youth Advisory Council. Through this representation the students can be
a part of citywide projects with all schools. Community service activities have
included support for Red Cross, Help the Hooch, food drives, clothing drives,
and many more.
Our Students
Students who are interested in a challenge are encouraged to
apply for this program. Applicants are selected by their performance on
state/national tests, grade point average, and recommendations from teachers.
State identified gifted students and students previously enrolled in magnet
programs at other schools are given priority.

Richards Middle School
Our Academic Program
The International Baccalaureate
Program is a program of advanced study in all core academic areas designed to
meet the educational needs of high-ability and high-achieving students. It also
includes a full year of foreign language instruction during each year of the
program along with enrichment area studies such as music, art, and technology
while emphasizing the connectivity of all areas. As the name suggests, the IB
program is used in countries around the globe. In the Muscogee County School
District, three schools are IB schools: Clubview Elementary, Richards Middle,
and Hardaway High. These schools enable a student to enjoy a total IB
educational experience while attending elementary and middle schools on the same
campus and attending high school a few blocks away. However, students from any
elementary school may apply for entry into the Richards IB program, and students
leaving Richards will be prepared for any high school’s advanced instruction.
Our Students
The IB classes will be limited to
those students in the top 25%, approximately, of their peer group. Their studies
will emphasize the “wholeness” of learning and will seek to educate and develop
the whole person. It will emphasize global aspects of the core academic areas as
well that of the human experience. Math, science, social studies, language arts,
and enrichment courses will be studied by students as interconnected,
cross-curriculum areas with worldwide relevance and application. The IB program
focuses on the development and maturity of the middle school student.
