Secondary Vocational Connections

On November 18, 1999, the Georgia Department of Education granted a three-year waiver for the development an evaluation of the Secondary Vocational Connections (SVC) program.  This dropout prevention and recovery initiative allows qualified students to earn a Technology Career Diploma in one year.  Components include:

  • Eligibility - Seventeen years or older, six or fewer core academic credits, score of at least 8.0 on Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) successful interview with SVC professionals, and appropriate recommendation and references
  • Course work - Computer assisted instruction (Software designed by PLATO) and certified teachers for academic benchmarks and Georgia High School Graduation Test preparation
  • Vocational certification through regular ASC courses
  • Volunteer Service, Career Education Portfolio required
  • Joint enrollment options with the local technical college
The Academic Success Center (ASC) is a nontraditional academic alternative school established by the Muscogee County School District in Columbus, Georgia to help high school students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to complete academic requirements and apply vocational training.  ASC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and offers regular academic classes, as well as vocational courses that include;  Construction Technology, Business Education, Family Consumer Science, Public Safety Occupations, Cosmetology, and Health Occupations.  A state of the art computer lab is utilized during regular scheduled times for graduation test preparation, curriculum enhancement, and remediation.  PLATO software is used in the program, as well as our Secondary Vocational Connections (SVC) initiative.

Students must apply for enrollment.  Those who are accepted may work to get on track and return to their base school, or remain for an extended time and earn graduation credits.  Those who complete graduation requirements while they are enrolled at ASC receive a high school diploma from their regularly assigned school and may participate in the commencement exercises at that school.
