Two Students Win
USS Georgia Return to Service State Art Competition
|
On March 28, the officers and crew of the USS Georgia (SSGN 729), a newly
converted Guided Missile Submarine, joined friends and neighbors in
celebrating their return home with a Return to Service Ceremony at Naval
Submarine Base, Kings Bay. In an effort to make young people aware of this
celebration, a statewide art contest for Georgia students was held. The
theme of the contest was Bringing the USS Georgia Home: Celebrating
Georgia’s Ambassadors for Peace.
Sebastian Wilson, a first-grader at Clubview, won at the elementary level
with his colored pencil and marker drawing of the submarine with a city in
the background. His art teacher is Carley Thigpen, and his principal is
Adele Lindsey.
Rachel Hawk of Midland Middle was a first-place winner for middle schools.
Her water color pencil rendering featured a sailor saluting the returning
submarine as it sails into a Georgia sunset. Her art teacher is James Decker
and her principal is Richard Green.
Each student received a cash award of $100, a signed photograph of the USS
Georgia, a certificate signed by the commanding Officer of the USS Georgia
and the Art Competition Chair, a signed photograph of the USS Georgia, a
commemorative coin, and a ball cap. Their framed designs were on display
along with other winners at the homecoming of the USS Georgia.
During the April Board meeting, the students, their teachers, and their
principals were recognized by the Board.
