The unique program was initiated in 1979 as a way of recognizing and
encouraging academic and overall excellence among promising middle school
students in the Muscogee County School District. T. Hiram Stanley served as
the Kiwanis Club President in 1948 and the Kiwanis Georgia District Governor
in 1958. He was also a high school principal in Mississippi and a long term
member of the Muscogee County Board of Education who served as Chairman.
Funds for the T. Hiram Stanley Scholarships are raised by the Kiwanis Club
of Columbus through a golf tournament with generous underwriting from
Knology and Columbus Regional Healthcare, members of the club, and the
community. Over $189,000 has been awarded through this program to deserving
students.
