MCSD Honored as a Leader in the State
Improving Performance of Students with Disabilities
The Georgia Council for
Administrators of Special Education (G-CASE) honored MCSD for
meeting the state target for educating young children in the least
restrictive environment (Size Group A: Over 3,000 Students with
Disabilities). Data from the 2006-2007 school year reflected the
accomplishments of the system. The district received special recognition at
the G-CASE Fall Conference, “A Pyramid of Supports for Georgia School
Leaders,” held November 7-9, 2007, in Athens, Georgia.
Dr. Martha R. Reichrath, Deputy State Superintendent of Office of
Standards Instruction and Assessment, says, “Success is not possible without
the diligent efforts of many people. We are grateful to you, your special
education director, your staff, parents and community members of your
stakeholders Committee.”
The Fall G-CASE conference presents topics to support leaders in
providing appropriate research based strategies and implementation of
programs. Each topic represented is based on the federal and state standards
for Special Education Leaders: The Four IDEA goals and 16 performance
indicators.
Participants received research-based information and models,
interventions and practices that support each tier of the Pyramid of
Intervention. The Professional Learning Pyramid was utilized as Educational
Leaders navigated through the rules and regulations of IDEA 2004 and NCLB. A
practical application approach using examples of evidenced-based results to
incorporate strategies on various levels was delivered to school based
leaders, graduation coaches, school psychologists and special education
directors. With continued collaborative efforts, we will see even greater
gains for students with disabilities in the future.
G-CASE serves the members of CASE who live and work in Georgia. The
organization’s major goal is to provide improved services to children with
special needs by providing professional development, leadership and support
to members. G-CASE also provides input on policies and practices which
impact the quality of education for students with disabilities in Georgia.
