Four MCSD schools received honors from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement as Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) in the “Highest Performance” and “Greatest Gain” categories. During the December Board meeting the four principals were recognized.

SSAS Highest Performance Winners

  • Britt David Elementary Magnet Academy, Platinum - Ronnie Collins, Principal

  • Columbus High School, Platinum - Susan Bryant, Principal

  • Mathews Elementary, Bronze - Dianne Sharpe, Principal

SSAS Greatest Gain Winner

  • Gentian Elementary, Silver - Rodney Harrison, Principal

Each school will receive a letter of congratulations and a banner from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement.

Under the No Child Left Behind legislation, and as mandated by state law, Georgia is required to develop a Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) which includes awards and consequences. Awards are presented to schools that show excellence in student achievement and/or progress in student achievement.  To date, awards have included recognition banners for all schools.  In addition, several schools earning awards through both great achievement gains and highest achievement performance have received a personal visit from the State Superintendent of Schools and the Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement.

Award-winning schools must meet the following criteria, which are based on the results of the most recent two years of Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) (grades 1-8 in reading, English/language arts, math, social studies, and science) and/or the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) (grade 11 first time test takers - English/language arts, math, science, and social studies).  Criteria are based on Full Academic Year (FAY) students.  Both the CRCT and the GHSGT classify achievement in terms of the percent of students who a) do not meet standards, b) meet standards, and c) exceed standards.
