Northside Earns Honor in Governor’s Cup Challenge
|
During the October Board meeting Northside High was recognized as a regional winner of the 2007
Governor’s Cup
Challenge. Assistant Principal Alfred Parham represented the
school and was introduced by Dr. Billy Kendall, Assistant to the
Superintendent.
Northside has shown significant three-year average
gains in critical reading and math SAT scores, gains which enable more
students to have access to postsecondary opportunities. As one of 35
regional winners, Northside High earned a $1000 grant to be used by the
school to support continued SAT preparation efforts. In addition, the school
has also received a regional champion trophy for bragging rights provided by
Turner Broadcasting System.
Governor Sonny Perdue says, “The Governor’s Cup competition highlights
our best performers so that practitioners may learn from them. It presents
an opportunity to celebrate success in the face of increased expectations
and educational challenges.”
Five high schools won their respective classes and were awarded a
Governor's Cup trophy and a $2000 grant.
- Class A: Treutlen Middle and High School, Treutlen County
- Class AA: Mitchell-Baker High School, Mitchell County
- Class AAA: Perry High School, Houston County
- Class AAAA: Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, Catoosa County
- Class AAAAA: Alpharetta High School, Fulton County
Along with the Governor’s Cup challenge, Governor Perdue also launched
www.gacollege411.org,
an online resource providing post-secondary education planning materials to
students statewide. Governor Perdue and State Superintendent of Schools,
Kathy Cox, have also made free online SAT prep classes available to all high
school students. In 2006-2007, nearly 40 percent of Georgia's high school
students from private, public, and home school programs used the SAT prep
class.
