This tournament is designed by the Columbus High sponsors to recognize accomplishments in mathematics
by middle school students, to give them experience in math tournaments, and
to encourage interest in mathematics.
Each participating school has one team of four to eight students. The
competition consists of an individual test and team ciphering. Each
individual team member takes the written test, a multiple-choice
examination lasting one hour. The written test is comprised of 30-40
questions involving general math, problem solving, graph and chart
interpretation, along with basic algebra and geometry skills. Each question
is worth one
point, and there is no penalty for incorrect answers. The top four
scores count towards the team total.
The ciphering competition takes place in two rounds. In each round,
four students work as a team to solve eight problems. Sponsors may
substitute team members between the two rounds to allow all students an
opportunity to cipher. Each question has a two-minute time limit.
Correct answers submitted in the first minute are worth 10 points, and
correct answers submitted in the second minute are worth five points.
