MARSHALL RECEIVES GRANT FROM TARGET
Target, Inc., recently awarded a $1,000 grant to “Marshall Movers,” a
group of 115 students from Marshall Middle (approximately 33% of the student
population). The program provides safe, enriching activities for students
both after school and during summer months.
Activities include
- Counselor-in Training Positions with Columbus Parks and Recreation
- Fine Arts Experiences at the Liberty Theatre
(With the assistance of the Urban League of Greater Columbus)
- Servant Leader Positions with the Boys and Girls Clubs
- Community Beautification Projects through Hands on Columbus
Over the past three years, “Marshall Movers” participants have proven
they can positively impact the lives of participating students. There has
been an increase in student achievement, including standardized test scores,
improvement in test taking skills, increases in the number of students on
the honor roll, as well as an increase in reading and writing skills.
The grant funds will be used to expand the program to include a solid
grounding in the fine arts for the students involved in the program. Other
experiences planned for the school year include attendance at performances
at the Springer Opera House, a field trip to the Columbus Museum and the
historic Liberty Theatre, a tour of Ma Rainey’s home, arts and crafts
activities with local artists, and a performance at the Columbus Symphony
Orchestra.
Since 1946, Target has given five percent of its income to the
communities served by Target stores.
