Spencer Receives Knox Culpepper Sportsmanship Award

Spencer High School is the recipient of the 2007 Knox Culpepper
Sportsmanship Award. MCSD Athletic Director Dr. Gary Gibson (far right)
presented the award during the January Board meeting to Spencer Athletic
Director and Head Football Coach Oliver Davis (middle) and Principal
Reginald Griffin (left).
This award was started 16 years ago by friends of Knox Culpepper, who
attended Columbus High School from 1948-1951 and made all bi-city athlete
all four years. This award is given annually to the high school football
program with the highest average score in five areas: conduct of players,
conduct of coaches, conduct of students, conduct of band, and conduct of
cheerleaders.
The scores are compiled from data collected by a representative chosen
from each school, either by the Athletic Director or Principal, to attend
football games and rate the teams on the above criteria. They are rated on a
scale of 1-5, with 5 being the best. These scores are tallied and each year
the school with the highest average receives the award.
