of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer
|
At the October meeting, the Board thanked Harry Franklin, the education
reporter for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer since the summer of 2006.
Harry has recently been named the reporter for police, fire, and crime news.
Harry Franklin was born in Philippi, West Virginia, site of the first land
battle of the Civil War, and he now lives in Columbus, scene of the last
land battle of the war. However, he grew up in Clarkston, east of Atlanta.
He is married to Patricia Gail Quinn Franklin and they have two surviving
children who live in Columbus.
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from the University
of Georgia, he interned with the Columbus Ledger in the summer of 1967. His
professional career began by covering the state news for The Athens Daily
News and he later worked as a governmental affairs reporter for the
Greenville News. He helped start a new daily newspaper in Anderson, South
Carolina. He then returned to work fulltime at the Ledger-Enquirer in
April, 1971, where he has been a reporter for 36 ½ years.
He says, “It has been exciting, sometimes challenging, to watch education
move forward in Columbus. Working with administrators, principals, teachers,
students, and parents has been very rewarding to me. This is truly a case
where ‘It’s for the children.’ Hopefully, we all can keep that in mind and
stay focused on providing the best quality of education possible for every
student, given the resources available.”
