Lonnie Jackson Academy Named Outstanding
First-Year Teacher
2007-2008
|
This year’s Outstanding First-Year Teacher is Brook Wilson, second-grade
teacher at Lonnie Jackson Academy.
The Selection Committee applauded her as an outstanding educator and an
exemplary facilitator of student learning. Her students were highly engaged
in performance tasks and were able to articulate what they were expected to
know, do, and understand. During the May Board meeting, she and her
principal Kay Dowis were introduced to the Board by Dr. Billy Kendall.
Nominees must be classroom teachers in grade P-12 who have begun their
teaching careers on or after July 1, 2007, and have performed outstandingly
based on, but not limited to, the following: classroom performance,
contributions to the school and/or school community, original or innovative
ideas and approaches to teaching, initiative and motivation, a willingness
to share, knowledge of content, communications skills, passion and
enthusiasm, cooperation as a team member, improvement in student
achievement, knowledge and use of technology, and rapport with students,
staff, and parents.
Observations by the Committee
Classroom rituals allowed for great classroom management. The Committee
observed excellent use of time management to facilitate group work and
transitions. All transitions were very smooth. By building into the learning
schedule movement activities, the teacher established a positive environment
that facilitated learning and not misbehavior. Ms. Wilson used very low
level and positive intervention to control behavior. All indicators that one
would expect to be seen during a Georgia Assessment of Performance on School
Standards Analysis observation were evident in her classroom.
