Columbus High Senior
Wins Richard R. Miles Youth Award
Columbus High School senior Latrice Wilson will be presented the Richard
R. Miles Youth Award for assisting, encouraging, and promoting diversity in
her school and community. The Award will be presented Thursday, January 24,
2008, at the 4th Annual One Columbus Recognition Dinner at 7:00 pm in the
Trade Center ballroom. Morris Dees, founder and chief trial counsel for the
Southern Poverty Law Center, will be the keynote speaker.
Wilson has been a strong force for understanding among the cultures at
her school and has demonstrated a special interest in the Hispanic
population, working toward unification of girls of Hispanic descent with the
Girl Scouts organization.
Counselor Trikella Nelson says, “Latrice is a gifted, talented, and
well-rounded young lady, dedicated to life-long learning and continuous
growth as well as serving her community through volunteerism.”
In an essay required of all applicants for the award, Wilson wrote, "Each
race contributes something vial to the world, no matter how small, and a
loss of any one would create a void.”
The One Columbus Recognition Dinner is a region-wide event designed to
honor the accomplishments of those who have made a significant contribution
to unity in the community. Nominations for the Richard R. Miles Youth Award
are made through the Muscogee County School District and from other
accredited high schools in the Columbus community.
Two awards are offered each year by One Columbus. The Community
Excellence Award goes to a person or organization that has demonstrated
extraordinary leadership in promoting diversity in their organization or
sphere of influence within the Columbus community. Dan Amos, Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer for Aflac, Inc., will be honored with the Community
Excellence Award at the dinner
