COLUMBUS HIGH
SENIOR NAMED
STAR STUDENT
CO-WINNER
|
Will Whiteside, a senior at Columbus High School, has been named one of
the co-winners for Muscogee County in the STAR Student Program. Whiteside
and Allen Page, a student from Brookstone School, earned identical scores,
and both students will participate in the regional competition.
Whiteside has selected Young Won, a mathematics teacher at Columbus High,
as his STAR Teacher.
During the March Board meeting, the STAR student and STAR teacher were
recognized by the Board.
The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Program was created to
focus public attention on Georgia's outstanding students and the teachers
who have been most instrumental in their academic development. During the
past 50 years, the STAR Program has honored more than 21,000 high school
seniors who have chosen their STAR teachers to share in this recognition.
In addition to his STAR Student honor, Whiteside is also a former
Governor's Honors Program participant, as well as a current member of the
National Honor Society, the Robotics Team, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honorary, the
Physics TEAM, and the swim team. He is also working on his senior project
with a mentor to learn more about the functions of computer components, with
research specifications for a game computer, and will actually construct a
computer.
At the local level, the STAR Student from each school is determined by
the student who earns the highest composite score on a single sitting of the
Scholastic Aptitude Test and must also be in the top 10% of the class. After
each individual school selects its top scoring students, those students
compete for the same honor among all schools in the county. Regional STAR
winners and their STAR teachers are invited to Atlanta to compete for the
STAR awards.
