COLUMBUS HIGH WINS TOP HONORS
IN JETS TEAM ENGINEERING COMPETITION

Columbus High captured top honors among 22 schools in the Junior
Engineering Technical Society (JETS) Team Engineering competition held
at Auburn University Friday, February 29, 2008. A Junior Varsity squad
of underclassmen and a varsity squad of seniors represented Muscogee
County School District. Both teams won first place in their respective
categories. Columbus High also placed first in the event last year.
During the March Board meeting, several of the team members, their
sponsors, and Principal Susan Bryant were presented to the Board.
Varsity members are Eryn Maynard, Cyrus Vafadari, Will Whiteside,
William Miller, Ryan Shephard, Andrei Markov, Nathan Noack, and Avery
Baggett. Junior Varsity Members are Connor Dunn, Matias Almada, Ryan Thompson,
Sang Lee, Phil Wise, Gordan Rak, Michael Byers, and Matt Melhado.
The sponsoring teachers are Luther Richardson, AP Physics, and Dr.
Chris Spraggins, AP Biology.
The competition was part of E-Day (Engineering Day) at Auburn
University. Students were provided with hands-on engineering exhibits
and presentations in the morning, followed by an engineering competition
in the afternoon. The afternoon competition consisted of teams of up to
eight students working together to solve engineering problems concerning
the XXIX Olympia in Beijing China, August 2008.
JETS is a national non-profit educational organization dedicated to
promoting engineering and technology careers to our nation's young
people. JETS programs touch a diverse group of more than 40,000 students
and 10,000 educators from 6,000 high schools across the country every
year.
