SHIRLEY BOUIE OF CARVER WINS
SARA SPANO TOP TEACHER AWARD

Shirley Ann Bouie, Family and Consumer Sciences instructor at Carver High
School, was this year’s recipient of the Sara Spano Top Teacher Award. She
and her principal, Chris Lindsey, were presented to the Board at the May
meeting by Dr. Peggy Connell, Chief Academic Officer.
She was Carver’s Teacher of the Year and the 2003-2004 runner-up for the
Sara Spano Top Teacher Award. She is a member of Phi Delta Kappa and also
volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Working to instill a love of learning in her students, she says, “The most
important thing I teach my students is that an educated mind has a scholarly
bent. That once a student has knowledge and self-confidence, he or she can
achieve their goals. The love of learning is the key to success and
life-long happiness.”
