Shaw Wins Georgia Scholastic Press Association Awards

During the May Board meeting, two staff
members of the Shaw newspaper, The Silver Star, and their
sponsors, Sonya Boyd and Mona Griffin, were recognized for receiving second place at the
Georgia Scholastic Press
Association Awards ceremony in Athens, Georgia, on
April 27. In addition, The Silver Star won the State Community
Service Achievement Award for the second consecutive year.
Staff member Kayla Whitaker (pictured third from left) won a first-place award for the
sports story, “How Sweet It Is,” about Shaw's victory over Carver at the
Georgia Dome in the state football playoffs. Kayla has won six
scholarships, including the Whitney Kees Drug Free Youth Award. Staffer
Erin Henderson (pictured left) has a full scholarship to Wesleyan and was the Page One
Journalism winner. Sponsor Sonya Boyd (pictured second from left) received an Appreciation Award for her years
of involvement with GSPA, specifically her two years on the
advisory board.
