MUSCOGEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

BOARD RECOGNIZES CONTRIBUTIONS
OF PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

At the December Board meeting the Board recognized the contributions of Partners In Education (PIE) to our schools.  Vice Chairman James Walker presented a memento to PIE representatives Mike Gaymon, Executive Director of Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce; Helen Johnson of CB&T, Past President of PIE; and Phyllis Lott, Vice-President, Education and Workforce Development, Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

Greater Columbus Partners in Education (PIE) was established in 1987 as a joint venture of the Muscogee County School District and the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce. Originally known as “Adopt-a-School,” its purpose was to improve education by stimulating meaningful business and community involvement in public schools. Through individual partnerships with businesses, professional organizations, churches, civic clubs, and military units, public and private schools are now able to tap resources to meet the individual needs of each student body, provide excellent educational programming, and recognize achievement.

A volunteer board of directors, chaired by a high-level corporate executive or community leader, governs the operations of PIE. The board has approximately 25 members representing Columbus’ business and higher education communities, private schools, the public school districts, and the Muscogee County Board of Education. The program is staffed by the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce under the Education and Workforce Development Department.

Partners in Education provides for the development and supportive maintenance of regional partnerships. These partnerships provide for increased educational and enrichment opportunities for local students aimed at improving levels of achievement, self-esteem, and understanding of the expectations of the work world. Partnerships also provide for school staff education and recognition, thereby increasing staff morale and enthusiasm.

The PIE Program is based on the belief that active involvement in the schools provides a deeper understanding of education and what is needed to make a positive difference in the lives of school children.

PIE Pledge

“To honor the commitment we are establishing today,
we promise to share ourselves, our time and talents,
in the hope that we may all enjoy a lasting partnership.”
