Three More MCSD Teachers Gain National Board Certification

Three more MCSD teachers have gained National Board Certification. During
the February Board meeting, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Peggy Connell
introduced them to the Board.
Marilyn Brannon – Northside High School, Counseling
Richard Carney – Northside High School, Business Education
George Downey – Blackmon Road Middle School, School Counseling
In 2006, 191 Georgia teachers and 7,800 teachers nationwide became
certified.
Only 55,306 teachers in the United States have achieved this certification,
including 2,332 in Georgia and 41 in Muscogee County. Georgia ranks 12th in
the nation in National Certification.
National Board Certification is a voluntary year long process achieved
through a performance-based assessment. This process is a rigorous one. The
assessment measures a teacher’s subject matter knowledge, provides evidence
that teachers are fluent in teaching their subjects to students and
demonstrates a teacher’s ability to manage and measure student learning.
