Blackmon Road Wins
Middle School Math Tournament
On November 4, nearly one hundred students from thirteen local middle
schools met for the fourth annual Columbus High School middle school
mathematics competition.
Blackmon Road team won first place, followed by Richards in second and
Midland in third.
The top individual scorers were Gautam Chebrolu in first place, Kevin
Tjen in second, and Pranam Chatterjee in third, all from Blackmon Road
Middle.
The top scorers from each team were Aaron Sommer, Arnold; Gautam Chebrolu,
Blackmon Road; Joo Yeok Lee, Brookstone; Orin Lincoln, Double Churches; Alec
Aften, Harris County; JR Hall, Midland; Mary Ann Ionascu, Richards; Kelsey
Rushing, Sanford; Madison Horton, St. Luke; Aciane Caroll, Rothschild;
Justin Dunlap, Faith; Shawn Coles, Eddy; and De’Shiana Durham, South Girard.
For the first event, each student took a 40-question test covering a wide
variety of math topics, including geometry and algebra. Later, the
participants competed in teams in two ciphering rounds containing eight
questions each; the students had to work together and race against the clock
to come up with the answer with only two minutes for each question. No
calculators were allowed for any part of the competition.
Held every year, the tournament draws volunteers from Columbus High’s
Math Department, Math Team, and Mu Alpha Theta. The event was coordinated by
senior Cameron Fulbright. The volunteers hope to promote interest in
mathematics and to provide a service to the community.
