
Under state law, minors between 12 years of age (14 years
of age under federal law) and 17 years of age must obtain an Employment
Certificate to work in a business unless the minor is working for a
parent/guardian who owns the business. Applications can be obtained from
the middle or high school of attendance or from the Department of
Student Services. The minor must present a certified birth certificate
to the issuing officer to obtain an Employment Certificate.

ONLINE WORK PERMIT SYSTEM
The Georgia Department of Labor now has an
Online Work Permit System for applicants, employers, and
issuing officers. Applicants can enter their information
from any computer by using the following link:

Instructions for Using the Online Work Permit
System

Select the Child Labor Quick Link.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select
Online Work Permit and then select Minor.

Enter personal information, verify accuracy, and
click Submit.

Print a copy of the Work Permit Data Sheet to
give employers.
With an approved Certificate of Employment, a
Permanent Identification Card will be issued to minors 16 and 17
years of age. The minor keeps the ID card and presents the
employment certificate to the employer. On subsequent employment,
the ID card is presented to the employer who should make a copy of
the card and return the original to the minor.
Based on the age of the minor, there are certain restrictions
regarding hours of work and type of work allowed. For more
