Tonya Hawkins of Social Services
Wins January ABCD Award
“Above and Beyond the Call of Duty”

Tonya Hawkins, Social Worker, was introduced by Chief Human Resources
Officer Don Cooper to the Board during the January meeting as the winner of
the January ABCD Award. She has been employed by MCSD since 2004 and
is a tenacious woman who perseveres through any challenge she is given at
Hannan. She is thoroughly aware of available community resources and
outreach programs, and she is able to effectively communicate with
individuals from various walks of life. She has been able to reach several
families during their times of crisis in a manner that was genuinely helpful
and not demeaning.
She has assisted Hannan families out of deplorable living conditions into
homes that allow these students to succeed in school. They are no longer
worried about leaking roofs and holes in the floors, so their minds are free
to learn. She has been a breath of fresh air to students, faculty, and
staff. Whenever she has been called for assistance, she has always responded
promptly and professionally.
She meets with members of Hannan’s staff weekly to stay abreast of
truancy issues. By acting as a liaison between the school district and the
family, she has been able to take care of attendance issues before a student
suffers academically.
Her passion for her job shows. She helps students to become shining
examples of what can happen when parents, teachers, students, and the
community work together. Going “Above and Beyond” is what Mrs. Hawkins knows
how to do.
