Georgia law requires that curriculum-based assessments be
administered in grade eleven for graduation purposes. The Georgia High
School Graduation Test is administered four times a year. In March, it is
given to all juniors and seniors who have not passed all components of the
test. Summary statistics are reported by the state only for eleventh-grade
students who are taking the test for the first time.
Results
of these tests are used to identify students who may need additional
instruction in academic content considered essential for a high school
diploma. The tests cover only a sample of the knowledge and skills that
constitute a complete high school education. A Georgia high school graduate
will have had opportunities to learn - and is expected to have mastered -
much more than these tests can address. The knowledge and skills assessed on
the graduation tests were selected by Georgia educators, including high
school teachers and curriculum specialists. The tests are based on the
content standards specified in the Quality Core Curriculum [QCC] for grades
nine through twelve, as established by the State Board of Education.
