GALILEO

GALILEO stands for GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online, an initiative of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. A World Wide Web-based virtual library, GALILEO provides access to multiple information resources, including secured access to licensed products. Participating institutions may access over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. Over 2000 journal titles are provided in full-text. Other resources include encyclopedias, business directories, and government publications.

Some of these resources are available to anyone on the Internet, and some are available only to subscribers--for example, people using MCSD computers on the WAN or people in public libraries.  MCSD teachers and students not on the WAN can obtain a password from their media specialist in order to gain access to these additional resources.  When you visit the GALILEO website, look at the bottom right of the screen to identify your level of access.

CURRENT GALILEO NEWS

A new database, Vanishing Georgia, has been added to the Digital Library of Georgia. Vanishing
Georgia is currently in demo; it will be in production and available to all users on September 16, 2003. The demo URL is: http://dbs.galib.uga.edu/vanga/html/vanga_homeframe_default.html.

Vanishing Georgia contains nearly 18,000 photographs documenting more than 100 years of Georgia history and life. These images cover family and business life, street scenes and architecture, agriculture, school and civic activities, landscapes, and important individuals and events in Georgia history among other topics.  Between 1975 and 1996, the Georgia Archives duplicated images held by individuals and organizations across the state in an effort to preserve Georgia’s historical photographs. The Georgia Archives joins with the Digital Library of Georgia to present the Vanishing Georgia images as a digital resource. Support for the project is provided by a Library Services and Technology Act grant administered through Georgia HomePLACE
